The reason lies in the fact that if the concept of perception is merely that of extensional experience of a distinct reality, no conceptual space is available for alternative INTRODUCTION 25 ultimate experiential avenues leading reliably out onto outer reality.

Recapitulation (1) At this point I offer a brief résumé, in which I set down something of the general character of what has gone before, and lay out schematically the order of the work which is to follow. How in the first place does one come to inquire into these two phenomena, consciousness and perception? And why should one be interested in their relation? I think it happens in the following way. Were that how matters stood, it would necessitate an explanation of the genus-species relation holding in these cases. But no such explanation exists. And the reason for this is, that ‘experience’ is not definable in terms of the properties of experiences.
