Although we have chosen Bloom's vertical model of cognition, there are others that can be useful in the processes described in this paper. Giving a text-heavy math test to Finnish first graders would be unfair. Then read the problem a second time and take note of the actual numbers involved. Debi Godfrey, Henrico County, models an exercise with arrays and place value to represent the distributive property in grade 5. But they do not get to teach kids, which is unfortunate. Finland has served as a model for other countries looking to improve their education systems. As you do this, I hope you will share them with me and with others. It would be gratifying if empirical research played a bigger role in directing educational practice, but, frequently, beliefs and convictions play more influential roles. But, in fact, I believe not only that teaching can be taught, but that if mathematics is to progress, it must be taught -- to the bright young people who will carry it on after us.
