The length of time that a fish can survive above water varies significantly from a few minutes up to several weeks depend on the species. Sharks have excellent senses that help make them great predators. The fact is, you are much more likely to be hit by a car, bitten by a dog, or even struck by lightning than you are to be attacked by a shark, except under the most unusual of circumstances. Viviparity, when the young are nourished through a placenta, occurs in only 9% of chondrichthyes. In July 2013, New York state, a major market and entry point for shark fins, banned the shark fin trade joining seven other states of the United States and the three Pacific U. The most inland specimen captured in the United States was taken in the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois, in 1937 (over 1800 miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico).

They have three main types of scales: cycloid (roundish, thin and flat), ctenoid (scales that have tiny teeth on their edges) and ganoid (thick scales that are rhomboid in shape). Approximately 80 percent of the shark, ray and skate families survived this extinction event. Usually only the fins are taken, while the rest of the shark is discarded, usually into the sea. Often humans simply get in the way of sharks finding a bite to eat. It has a huge head and a (comparatively) small, flattened body. Groups of Scalloped Hammerheads prefer staying in regions which have pinnacles or sea mounts which reach from great depths practically to the water's surface.
