One orthodox classification of Hindu texts is to divide into Śruti ("revealed") and Smriti ("remembered") texts. They are symbols of the greater principle, representing and are never presumed to be the concept or entity itself. So it was considered that in order to establish any theistic philosophical theory (Astika Siddhanta) one ought not contradict Śruti (Vedas).
