One exciting recent project has been to show how some of the completely integrable systems from inverse scattering theory, such as the Korteweg-de Vries equation and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, can be derived from the anti-self-dual Yang Mills equations. This is always possible (with exponentially many Steiner points) if the polygon is unknotted, but NP-complete if no Steiner points are allowed. Also while dealing with connectivity Poincaré introduced the fundamental group of a variety and the concept of homotopy was introduced in the same 1895 papers.

The most important proof methods in topology are direct proofs, proof by exhaustion, proof by induction and proof by contradiction. It can be created by taking a paper strip and giving it a half-twist, and then joining the ends of the strip together to form a loop. Because homogeneity and isotropy are quite restrictive assumptions, there are only three possible answers for the local geometry of space at any fixed point in time – it can be spatially positively curved (locally like a 3-dimensional sphere), flat (locally like a 3-dimensional version of a flat plane) or negatively spatially curved (locally like a 3-dimensional hyperboloid).

The work on the problem during the 20th century has resulted in large parts of the current immense edifice of modern topology. (In the same way that work on Fermat's Last Theorem is responsible for much of algebraic number theory, and even a lot of modern abstract algebra itself.) It should be noted that Poincaré did not have a very high regard for point set topology, in part because of lingering suspicions about the soundness of Cantorian set theory in general and its lack of "constructiveness" (a technical term) in particular.
